ND Sets New Production Record

North Dakota set a new production record as warmer weather allowed more producers into the field. Daily production in December soared to 544,880 BOPD, an increase of over November’s production of 510,610 BOPD.

With 199 rigs drilling during December, the number of producing wells reached 6,471— also a new record.

The warm, dry weather allowed producers to step up hydraulic fracturing to put wells on production and just under 300 wells are waiting on fracs now, according to Lynn Helms, director of the ND Dept. of Mineral Resources.

His agency issued 180 drilling permits and two seismic permits in December. During that month, the price paid for Bakken crude averaged $88.57 a barrel.

Converse County Dominates WY Sale

Converse County in Wyoming dominated the high bidding at the Feb. 7 Bureau of Land Management sale, which netted $21.7 million in bonuses with bids averaging $129 an acre.

High bidder was Hoover and Stacy, Inc. of Cheyenne, which paid $2,625 an acre for 641 acres for a total of $1.6 million in sections 20 and 21, T41N-R71W.

The BLM sold leases on 168,737 acres, and half the money goes to the State of Wyoming.

Hoover and Stacy placed the second highest bid, paying $2,575/acre for 488 acres in sections 28 and 33, T40N-R71W and $2,625/acre for 325 acres in Sec. 29, T40N-R71W.

In the same county, SM Energy Co. of Billings was high bidder at $1,770/acre for 200 acres in Sec. 21, T40N-R76W. Pacer Energy Acquisitions LLC of Gillette placed a high bid of $1,650/acre for 807 acres in sections 22 and 27, T40N-R71W.

Barnes Land and Energy Co. of Casper came in with a high bid of $1,325/acre for 1,700 acres in sections 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 22, 23, and 24, T35N-R68W. Pacer Energy bid a high of $1,060/acre for 637 acres in Sec. 4, T39N-R71W. Hoover and Stacy paid a high bid of $800/acre for 958 acres in sections 30 and 31, T40N-R71W.

Bakken Crude Price Disparity Expected To Narrow

The wide disparity between prices paid for light sweet Bakken crude oil and West Texas Intermediate crude, which rose to as much as $27.50 a barrel, now appears to be heading back to a more normal discount of $7.50, according to one analyst, Marty Beskow with Northland Capital Markets in Minneapolis.

“We believe the large Bakken discount is only temporary and will be helped in the near term with a significant amount of rail capacity coming online over the next few months,” Beskow said, “to take away more of the crude to the highest paying markets, which is currently LLS (Louisiana).”

Even though it costs more—between $9 and $15 a barrel—to send crude oil to the St. James, LA terminals by rail, the premium pricing there is about $20 more a barrel.

“Once the added rail capacity comes on,” Beskow said, “we believe Bakken discount will revert to normal.”

He pointed out that at least three refineries, each having a capacity of 100,000 BOPD, might be idled for between one to four weeks for routine maintenance. No formal announcement has been made yet.

He estimates that if WTI is trading at $90.00 a barrel, Bakken oil will have a 17% average spread, with prices averaging $78.75 a barrel.

Rick Santorum

GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum was briefed by Tioga geologist Kathy Neset and others during his visit to North Dakota oilfields earlier this month. Santorum praised the efforts of the industry in state, where daily production has now exceeded 550,000 BOPD.
